About FMS

“Providing more than just prescription services since 1959”

Founded in 1959, as Jefferson Health Foundation, our company planted its roots in the coal-mining city of Birmingham, AL. We were more than just a pharmacy back in those days; we were a group of small, non-profit medical clinics funded by the National Black Lung Grant. As the city and its industry began to grow and develop, so did the need for our services. We opened additional clinic locations in the surrounding communities of Bessemer (FMS Pharmacy) and Jasper (English Plaza Pharmacy), offering a variety of specialized pharmacy services at each location.

By the mid-1980s, all clinic operations were ceased. With new growth in the upcoming communities surrounding Birmingham, the company expanded its operations and in the late 1980s, Family Medical Services purchased Montevallo Drug. Family Medical Services remains dedicated to providing more than just prescription-filling services. We want our customers to be proud to support and recommend a business that is still locally owned and operated.

We do things differently than most other pharmacies. You can always expect to be personally counseled by one of our pharmacists on your prescription medications. The specialized services we provide are personable, unique to your needs and unlike any found in larger chain drug stores.

We are a patient education and health resource destination. Identifying your needs and finding ways to overcome medication barriers, developing relationships and providing world-class customer service are at the heart of what we do. We are a full service diabetes resource center; focusing on specialized diabetic products. We offer custom-fitted diabetic shoes, socks, diabetic testing supplies and diabetes education classes designed to help you live and maintain a healthy life with diabetes. Our mission is to always take the extra steps necessary to support our customers and bring value to our community.

We care about your needs and have even had one of our pharmacists selected as a 2012 One to One Patient Counseling Recognition Awardee. Congratulations to Patrick for this awesome award by the American Pharmacy Association.
